I'd like to tell you a story about a place on Clement street. Standing at the entrance of this place were two gentlemen, very kind, who held the door open. As we made our way inside, the same gentlemen, would eventually pass behind us to a corner booth nestled to the far left of the dining area. Coincidently we were seated adjacently, one table over. As one of the gentleman's arm gave way to a restful teeter totter on the booth's edge, they conversed in grown man banter. Before we sat down, I watchfully canvassed the corrugated walls, which were sporty in manner and clung tightly to memorabilia reminiscent of a bayou hangout. A sultry serenade of Blues melodies played from above, adding to the ambiance of the overall theme. Our server took our order, and one Sweet Tea later, our table was adorned with a delicious meal. The corn bread muffins, a sweetheart of a starter, were crisp on the edges warm and tender inside. The Collard greens and Red Beans and Rice well executed, could have used just a smidge of flavor, but overall well executed. The Fried chicken and waffles set me straight. While I devoured each piece, I developed a crush on the duo. I tried to figure out what the secret ingredient was in the waffle, which was robust and . The fried chicken crispy, seasoned perfectly inside and out. The macaroni, something to lust after, creamy and toothsome. The porkchop an ambitious attempt, seasoned perfectly, a tad bit overcooked. The Oxtails made me want to call somebody, anybody really, and whether I lived with them or not, I was going to call, and tell them I was not coming home. Lastly, the Candied Yams, , sweet and charming, a long term affair, one I would spend many lifetimes with. The Hard Knox Cafe is the place you go to for some home cooked soul food.
